m a k o n i is MARIO KOCH from NIESE
The name m a k o n i was inspired by ALRIKO, the former business of my grandfather Alfons Ringele from Kollerbeck. makoni design, product development and distribution, represents the connection between craft and design, the production of high quality products, the preservation of tradition and regional value creation in today’s modern world. The relationship to things that surround me in my daily life is important to me. I strive to create favorite pieces that accompany one throughout one’s life. My products should develop a patina here and there with age. The longer such a special object personally accompanies me thru life, the higher its worth, adding to my contribution to sustainability over our life together.
m a k o n i seeks the niche, the attention to small details, the unique and always a new perspective.
My work experience started with an apprenticeship as organ and harmonium builder. About six years later I studied interior architecture at the FH Lippe in Detmold. As an interior architect I developed and planed furniture, stores, offices, displays, exhibition stands as well as a portion of a football stadium. In more than twenty years of work experience my creativity has found many areas of application: Design, technical solutions, strategy and business management. My activities with various privately owned and operated companies have lead me to far parts of the world and have given me insight into different economic sectors. I have had the good fortune over the course of my work life to gather a lot of knowledge - my start capital for my own business.
Today I develop my own products.
m a k o n i is a registered trademark under which I develop and distribute products and furniture that originate from my own needs. Several years ago I was looking for a waste system for the bathroom. I did not find any that I liked and so I made my own designs and had two prototypes made of them. They were put in both of our bathrooms and proved to be a success. Friends who were interested in them also approached me. Today my waste system is under the name Hank & Eve in production and is offered under the brand name makoni design.
My piano stools form a second product line. After a long pause I started playing the piano again during a sabbatical. I found a used school piano at a piano builder in Augsburg. I thought the stool should be something special, unusual, modern, an eye catcher! After searching for three months I gave up. There was nothing to be found which was close to what I had envisioned. It was not long until the first designs were sketches. This happened during the process of my new work orientation and so a new business idea arose.
“Furniture for Musicians” is a work title under which I imagine new ideas for equipment and accessories for the world of musicians. Seating or stem furniture, music stands, instrument stands, lamps or decoration are all possible. In April 2017 I presented the prototypes of my first piano stools at the music fair in Frankfurt.
For the production I work predominantly together with local manufacturers in Lippe. Short distances, personal contact and supporting the business sector in my hometown are important to me. I would also like to raise our awareness of values, opposing throwaway culture with long lasting aesthetics. This begins with consideration of form and function, the choice of materials and processing, up to ideal values and emotions. For me, “Made in Germany” stands for holistic sustainability in thought and action. m a k o n i stands for identity and authenticity, individuality and timelessness.
